Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) today embarked on a pilot project to introduce barn owls for rat population control in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
The first pair of barn owls were released today in SS15/2E, in a project believed to be the first of its kind in Asia. The project is a joint effort between MPSJ, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) and SJ Echo.
MPSJ president Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said MPSJ had previously tried to kill the rats with poison.
“The effort is less effective as the rats build up tolerance for the poison,” he said.
